The Binary Comparative Approach in the Identification of Contingent Democratization Processes

By Mamoudou Gazibo
English

This article is a methodological discussion on the binary comparative approach as used in a doctoral thesis on democratization in Benin and Niger. Similar to the case study in terms of research, but striving to achieve results generally expected from broader comparisons, it posits methodological challenges and exposes specific temptations arising notably from the duality of the subject. It not only examines two case studies, but also offers a source of theoretical knowledge. However, the generalizations that we draw from it should be considered as pointers and subject to revision in the light of a greater number of case studies. This in no way detracts from its heuristic value, however.
