Organized Crime and Corruption in Sweden
By Carina Gunnarson
English

This paper studies the existence of organized crime, notably drug traffic, and corruption in Sweden. It is partly based on police reports and interviews with police and customs officials. The author concludes that there is no evidence of the existence of a superstructure in organized crime related to drugs. Networks are poorly structured and geographically dispersed. Four examples reveal considerable differences between the organizational structures of the various criminal groups, from minimally organized networks to more structured groups. However, the Swedish authorities face serious problems connected with organized crime, particularly in specific areas of the country. Systematic threats against police and customs services are also raising concerns.
