The issue of the place of Arabic language on the current international stage brings into play a number of dimensions, along with variable and shifting interactions. Should we speak of one or several Arabic languages? Similarly, should we consider that there are one or several Arab worlds? What are the interactions between Arabic and cultural aspects, particularly Islam, and politics? Is it conceivable that we might dissociate linguistic aspects from political dimensions? What are the connections between Arabic, Arabness, Arabism, and the Arabic-speaking world? These questions reveal several aspects of the complexity of the dimensions to be studied.
