The Use of the Moreno Question in France and the United Kingdom
Thema: Identities in Competition - Debating the Use of the Moreno Question
By Alistair Cole, Jocelyn EvansEnglish
This paper compares Wales and Brittany, two regions with a marked identity within two states, France and the United Kingdom, with a unitarian tradition, even if in the latter case there is greater tolerance of the expression of regional identities. The analysis deals with both macro and micro levels. Applying the Moreno Question, our study reveals that a dual identity is accepted more easily in Brittany than in Wales. There are few conflicts between the sense of being both Breton and French, whereas for a substantial minority of Welsh respondents, British identity is perceived negatively. The causes of this divergence are analyzed within the framework of a deep binary comparison.
