Public Debate and Discourses of Legitimization in France and Great-Britain in Response to European Integration

As the historical institutionalist approach shows through its analysis of "simple" political regimes disturbed by the particularly complex (or "compound") European system, France and Great Britain have faced identical difficulties in adapting to the European Union at the institutional level. However, both countries have made sharply contrasting contributions to European integration, which can be explained by differences in conceptualizations and discourses by national political leaders, as the discursive institutionalist approach demonstrates.
