Rethinking Democratic Theory: Latin American Perspectives
By Guillermo O’Donnell
English
In this paper, the author suggests that an approach based on the political system alone is inadequate for the definition of democracy, although it is an essential aspect. An analysis of the situation of the rule of law and the legal state should also be taken into consideration. Based on this principle, he compares the situation in various Latin American countries in order to highlight the extent of the coexistence of their systems of political democracy and democratic rule of law.
