In this paper, the author considers the possibilities for observing democratic consolidation. He identifies the various observation rules used implicitly by researchers in accordance with the medical metaphor of health and illnesses of democracies, based on four approaches: the "symptom approach," the "tried-and-tested approach," the "preventive approach," and the "self-perception logic."
