Democratization in the Twentieth Century: A Comparison between Latin America and Eastern Europe
By Guy Hermet
English
In this paper, the author compares the twentieth-century democratization of Latin America with that of Eastern Europe. To do this, he questions the relevance of the concept of the "democratic transition" and lists the precautions that should be taken before using it. He outlines the fundamental differences between the Latin and post-Communist democratization processes and their partial resemblances and ambiguous parallelisms.
