Civil Society and Democracy in Africa
The Usefulness of an Oblique Vision
By René OtayekEnglish
This paper studies the recent issue of exporting the concept of civil society to Central Asia and, in particular, the role played by NGOs working in the region. It examines the relationship between the Western paradigm of civil society and existing societies and analyzes the main existing theories on this subject. We conclude with a description of the interaction between humanitarian aid and civil society in Afghanistan.
