African Forms of Federalism: The Concept of Federalism in the Political and Ethnic Turbulence of Africa

By Makita-Kass Kasongo
English

This paper offers a comparative analysis of the ideological basis for federalism in Africa, based on unique histories and processes of constitution building that aim to create political communities by institutionalizing power-sharing. This is done to both accommodate differences and as an expression of the desire to live together peacefully. The author attempts to identify an overall interpretative approach to the multinational state, which was conceived as a theoretical, political, and constitutional ideal for the building of truly independent nations in Africa.
