Fuzzy Sets to Provide Clarification: Decoding the Features of Coalition Agreements in Western Europe

By Catherine Moury
English

This paper seeks to understand why the completeness and precision of the coalition agreement varies in four European countries (Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, and France). Fuzzy sets are considered to be the appropriate method in an exploratory research context because they allow the necessary dialogue between ideas and evidence. The results suggest that the writing of an agreement can be seen as a two-level game: between the parties, and between the government and the parties that support it.
