Women and the Left in Chile: Are Relations between the Two Friendly?

By Bérengère Marques-Pereira
English

To the extent that since its return to democracy, Chile has been governed by a center-left coalition, this case study is of particular interest in that it identifies the extent to which women?s movements maintain friendly relations with the left-wing parties that are forced to work with Christian Democrats. The paper focuses on this dynamic, which is punctuated by an institutional form of feminism and by cooperation with the State by feminist groups and associations. The aim of the paper is to examine the political treatment of two issues, divorce and abortion, which are of particular significance for women, the left, conservatives, and the Catholic Church.
