On the Apparent Modesty of Political Actors North of the 55th Parallel

Thema: The Nordic Model

On the basis of field research conducted in the Scandinavian countries and Finland during the 2001–“2006 period, this paper demonstrates the extent to which Nordic political actors constitute extreme cases with regard to the simplicity of their appearance. This is a key factor for legitimacy in this part of Europe, which goes beyond party divides. The paper is structured around a comparative interpretation that aims to question the relationship of the elites to status symbols, elegant manners, pomp, and a prestigious entourage, as well as, potentially, physical appearance. It goes on to critically examine two lines of reasoning (culturalist and ideological) that may help explain the basis for such attitudes. Lastly, a third, intermediary, an interpretative approach is proposed.
