The widespread occurrence of authoritarianism in post-colonial Africa is commonly analyzed as being the consequence of specific social, economic, or cultural variables in African societies. Without denying the importance of these variables, it is also appropriate to take into account the ideologies of the ruling elites. Post-colonial ideologies have never considered the question of democracy for its own sake but instead make use of myths, favoring unity to the detriment of liberal pluralism. Authoritarianism thus draws inspiration from a common ideological source. However, it is also interpreted in specific ways according to the personality of each head of state. These individuals contribute to determining the degree of coercion to be applied within authoritarianism, just as they directly influence democratization processes.
