Democracy, Civilian-Military Relations, and Military Efficiency
The problematization of military efficiency constitutes a way of renewing the analysis of civilian-military relations in a context in which the issue of military subordination to politics is less prominent in contemporary democracies. Are civilian-military relations a factor determining military efficiency in liberal democracies? What type of relations between political authorities and the military ensure the greatest military efficiency? The purpose of this paper is to offer a preliminary analysis of the relationships between civilian-military relations and military efficiency in liberal democracies. This analysis is based on a comparison between the United States, the United Kingdom, and France concerning overall strategy and the use of force.
