Stating the Political through the Religious: An Analysis of the Parliamentary Debate of May 4, 1985, on the Implementation of Sharî'a Law in Egypt
Thema: Parliaments in Authoritarian Arab Regimes
By Nourane HelmyEnglish
This paper describes a parliamentary debate on the application of divine (Shar?'a) law in Egypt. It shows how the relevance of the Quran argued for by speakers during the debate is interlaced with other elements pertinent to the parliamentary space, including democratic, national, and legal elements. However, one of these elements, namely democratic relevance, overrides all others so that if Koranic relevance is dominant in the discourse, the organization, direction, and dynamism of the exchanges are designed to serve the goals of the parliamentary institution.
