Populists, Extremists, and Ultras: A Reading of Political Man

Starting with a re-reading of the two updated editions of Political Man, this paper evaluates the relevance of the conceptual, theoretical, and empirical tools proposed by Lipset. In particular, the concepts of far-right and populism, which are subject to determined conceptual stretching, are usefully clarified. One especially notable concept is that of the far-center, which was created to describe the case of Fascism but which allows for more contemporary uses. Other useful concepts have been that of backlash, which carries the potential for further development, as well as his triadic presentation of political forces that has acted as a strong antidote to excessive reliance on data by advocates of the left-right continuum. While Lipset?s remarks on ecologists and on the US religious right may seem predictive, Lipset failed to grasp the nature of the Gaullist phenomenon and misunderstood Christian Democracy and, in general, political Catholicism.
