Thema: Questioning European Integration
By Bruno Cautrès, Nicolas MonceauEnglish
This paper proposes an analysis of a new phenomenon in Turkey, namely the rise of Euroscepticism. Based on Eurobarometers and national polls, it analyzes the profiles of Turkish Eurosceptics and addresses the phenomenon of Euroscepticism in Turkey in relation to important models of attitudes toward Europe before proposing elements of an interpretation. From this perspective, the paper emphasizes the economic logic and the evolution of the context as well as the issue of cultural identity, including the "Turkey syndromes," which are marked by the weight of history and memory, to explain increasing Turkish resistance to Europe.
