Following the switch to the euro, Italian public opinion became less favorable to the EU than it had been. However, this disappointment does not imply a rise in partisan Euroscepticism in Italy because as no political force was excluded from government and the European issue was never a reason for the non-formation or the breaking up of a coalition, there was no specific political alternative. In addition, when an event with negative consequences might justifiably be blamed on Europe, Italian political parties tend to blame their own domestic opponents instead.
