Muslims in the European Union are the bearers of different, even divergent, visions of Islam. Their attitudes toward religious dogma embrace the full spectrum of positions, from the strictest religious observance to a distancing from ritual practice. While some young Muslims are politically active in the name of a theology of engaged citizenship, there are many who do not make their relationship to Islam as a unique faith the only prism through which they interpret everyday reality and act in society. Just as Islamic life cannot be reduced to a religion-centered existence, Muslims do not act simply in terms of exclusively religious goals.
