The Geopolitical Projection of US Evangelical Megachurches
Over the past twenty years, a new religious protagonist has made its influence felt in geopolitics, namely evangelical megachurches, which are now present on all five continents. These megachurches are characterized principally by the large number of practicing faithful (at least 2,000 each week) and by their multiple activities. These churches have considerable financial resources and are imbued with a proselytizing culture. They oscillate between the model of the comfortable cocoon, a refuge for those damaged by globalization, and the model of the pioneer outpost, a base camp for Christian reconquest. One thing is certain: being so well adapted to the consumer society, urbanization, and the car culture, this cosmopolitan form of "extra extra large" Christianity will continue to have an influence on global issues.
