Political Generations and University Generations in the Palestinian Territories: Nationalisms and De-Marxization
This paper tests and overlays a generational frame of reference over the study of a specific Palestinian university group, namely social scientists. It first examines the historical context and the political structuring of this intellectual group in relation to the contemporary intifada generation. It then shows that the members of this group match intergenerational political markers that transcend allegiances, namely the experience of occupation and the subsequent nationalist engagement. Finally, it shows how this nationalist engagement carries different weights as a function of age and may be considered a generational marker. Finally, the paper allows for a partial explanation of the various scientific and political commitments of these intellectuals.
