Media and Politics: The Conditions of the Media Effect on the Belgian Parliamentary Agenda
Thema: Political Agendas
By Rens Vliegenthart, Stefaan WalgraveEnglish
In order to study the factors that limited or exacerbated the influence of the media on the Belgian parliamentary agenda between 1993 and 2000, we carried out a multi-level longitudinal analysis of five datasets. After emphasizing the importance of the media?s agenda, our results show that the characteristics of the parties (size, in government or in opposition, level of appropriation of problems by groups) and the content of the government?s agenda influence the degree to which the media affect the issues and questions raised in the Belgian Parliament. Finally, the apparent increase in the impact of the media confirms the growing presence of a media logic in political competition.
