Emerging Economies of Emerging Markets: Economic Development With and Without Democracy

Thema: A Comparative Political Analysis of Emerging Countries
By Jean-Louis Thiébault
English

This paper presents a comparative political analysis of emerging countries. It shows that the economic results of these countries have led to a strengthening of democracy in most of them. However, this success has not been achieved everywhere. Authoritarian or semi-authoritarian emerging countries have also achieved good economic results, yet have not wished to introduce political reform leading to democracy. The preservation of varying degrees of authoritarianism is seen as vital to safeguarding the high economic growth that allows a country to profit from greater prosperity and stability.
