Thema: Political Oppositions and Opposition Politics
By Nathalie Brack, Sharon Weinblum
English

Despite the centrality of political opposition in democracy, little theoretical research has focused on this issue since the 1970s. Yet the context in which the opposition was conceptualized at the time has changed in significant ways. This paper therefore aims to offer a new perspective on political opposition in contemporary democracies. Following a critical review of the classic and contemporary literature on the subject, it proposes a renewed definition of the concept of opposition that better grasps the complexity of political opposition. In addition, it offers a possible new agenda for future research in this area.
