Opposition with the European Parliament: The Case of the Eurosceptics

Thema: Political Oppositions and Opposition Politics

English

This paper examines the perceptions and practices Eurosceptic MEPs, who are considered anti-system actors, have of their mandate as representatives. The aim is first to determine to what extent hardline Eurosceptics develop a unified vision of their mandate as well as similar behavioral characteristics, or whether a degree of diversity is noticeable. Using the concept of political role, the paper shows that these representatives enjoy greater choice beyond having a voice or an exit strategy. Second, the paper combines institutional and individual factors to explain the choice of role by these actors.
